Pennsylvania Records 5% Increase in iGaming for 2023
The Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Program (DDAP) recently commissioned a review of online gambling in the state. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) funded the study, which Penn State University undertook.
More participation
Pollsters from Penn State University surveyed more than 1,800 individuals. It was found that more players chose to gamble online last year using online casino apps like Parx than they did the year before. They benefit from the convenience of playing online from the comfort of home on their mobile phones. They can choose from a variety of platforms and a wide range of casino games and betting options. Bonuses and promotions are available as online casinos face stiff competition and need to attract and retain players.
Participation in online gambling grew by 5% in 2023. As much as 16% of the population in Pennsylvania now take part in some form of online gambling. This includes playing online slot machines, interactive table games, betting at online sportsbooks, and taking part in iLottery. Online slots and table games bring in most of the revenue.
Responsible gambling
The report concluded that online gaming is successful, and a number of benefits come from increasing tax revenue to the state.
At the same time, researchers expressed concern about the possible negative impact on players and society. Around half of those who reported gambling online in some format said they had problems keeping their play in check.
Awareness of current gambling trends helps organizations like the DDAP to assess and address gambling behavior. Online gamblers were found to gamble more than retail players and often don’t have as large a bankroll. The DDAP helps to spread awareness about responsible gaming and offers access to resources and treatment.
Another finding from the survey was that iGaming could be taking business from brick-and-mortar casinos. Offline gambling participation has been declining and went from 67.5% to 62.5% while online gambling grew 5%.
Researchers recommended that as problem gambling is more prevalent among online gamblers, information about responsible gambling, and treatment should be offered in multiple online media formats.
Online gaming likely to keep growing
The economic forecast for the U.S. is optimistic despite fears about high interest rates, inflation, and slowing growth. It is likely to continue to perform well over the short term due to job market strength, exports, and consumer spending. In this environment, online gaming is also likely to continue to thrive and bring benefits. Pennsylvania has much to gain in terms of increasing tax revenue to the state. At the same time, the state and casino operators need to do everything they can to encourage responsible gambling.
